John Curl is the author of memoir, fiction, history, and poetry, and has published translations of ancient Mayan, Inca and Aztec poetry. He grew up in a multicultural family in Manhattan and rural New Jersey, lived in a Colorado commune in the 1960s, worked on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico in the 1970s, travels to distant corners of the Americas, and is a professional woodworker in a cooperative woodshop in Berkeley, California.

Beyond its notorious reputation as a center for psychedelics, it became a place where many Droppers moved beyond drugs.
